RunRev Introduces Pre-Alpha of revMobile for the iPhone, Enabling Rapid Application Development of iPhone Apps
revMobile on Track to Slash Development Time of iPhone and iPad Apps by a factor of 10; Video Shows iPhone App Creation in Three Hours
EDINBURGH, Scotland – March 11, 2010 – Software development company Runtime Revolution Ltd today announced the first iteration of its unique revMobile development platform for rapid application development on the Apple iPhone. Available for download today, the first pre-Alpha release enables development of fully functioning iPhone applications with many popular iPhone features:
♣ Multi-Touch – Create stunning interfaces that use gestures. Move multiple objects on screen with multiple fingers or pinch images to zoom in and out.
♣ Accelerometer – Apps respond as you move the phone. It's as simple as using the new accelerationChanged message.
♣ Shake Motion Detection – Detects when the iPhone has been shaken, for use when undoing or resetting a game. Just intercept the new motionStart, motionEnd and motionRelease messages.
♣ Select Photos from your Photo Library – Use the new iPhonePickPhoto command to select a photo using the iPhone image chooser.
RunRev expect to cut development times on the iPhone by a factor of ten with its high-level language and easy development cycle. Developers can watch a video showing development of an app from start to finish in 3 hours 16 minutes, by a novice iPhone developer. Watch the video.
Developers can get started with the pre-Alpha today by downloading the application and reading a discussion of how it was made here. revMobile will support iPhone, iPad, and Windows Mobile and Maemo platforms initially. There is already a pre-Alpha release available for Windows Mobile.
RunRev CEO Kevin Miller said, “We're thrilled to bring this first taste of the future to the iPhone platform. We have a long way to go before this is feature complete, but we are getting a lot of excited and enthusiastic feedback from users, who are astonished at how fast they can create iPhone apps even with a pre-Alpha version, and how powerful this release is already.”
revMobile uses the company’s revTalk programming language, a modern descendant of natural-language technologies such as Apple's HyperCard that enables software construction for everyone. With revMobile, developers will be able to develop and deploy to mobile platforms using a single code base, while being able to take advantage of native features on each device. Additionally developers can reuse code across Windows, Mac OS and Linux desktops, popular Web browsers and on Web servers.
revMobile will create standalone applications for each target platform. Due to current requirements iPhone/iPad apps must be submitted to the Apple App Store for approval, so revMobile will not be available as a Web plugin for mobile Safari or have the ability to execute dynamic code at runtime. The current pre-Alpha for iPhone is not yet able to create Apps for the Apple App Store, although later releases will do so. Windows Mobile and Maemo applications will be able to download and execute dynamic code. Native API support for a number of APIs will be present on all devices.
Developers are invited to join the pre-release program today. The first pre-Alpha for Windows Mobile is now available and additional platforms and revisions will be added over the coming months. The pre-release program starts at $799 and includes a number of early participation benefits. The shipping version of revMobile will be $999. Boost Software Development Productivity 10-Fold using Revolution by RunRev, Available Now in Free Version
Whether Creating Educational Coursework, Facebook Apps or Enterprise Solutions, Revolution Brings Dramatic Time and Resource Savings over Traditional Tools Such as Flash, Silverlight, Java, and C++
SAN FRANCISCO – November 11, 2009 – Software development company Runtime Revolution Ltd introduced today Revolution 4.0 for application and Web development, available for the first time in a free version. The flexibility of Rev allows developers to author on any platform and deploy true, native apps or Web content to any desktop—for example, author on Mac and deploy to Windows, author on Windows and deploy to Linux. Rev enables remarkable efficiencies by using an English syntax that requires 90-percent less code than traditional languages, and empowers people who would never have attempted programming to create successful applications. Projects that would take weeks can be done in days, while hours of tedious development work can be reduced to minutes.
A modern descendant of natural-language technologies such as Apple’s HyperCard, Rev enables software construction for everyone. The revTalk programming language is easy-to-use and memorable, making it easy to comprehend months after code is written, and therefore more effortlessly maintained. Where once companies would be forced to hire or acquire programming talent, professionals within academia, science and business are turning to Rev, spiking its popularity at a time when organizations are forced to increase productivity but with less time and fewer resources.
“The last two years have seen the most impressive growth in our business, pointing to a correlation between a tough global economy and the resourcefulness of professionals who need to do more with less,” said Kevin Miller, RunRev CEO. “Our goal is to enable rapid creation of applications, and that’s exactly what we’re doing with Rev 4.0. With a free version and Web plugin, anyone can begin writing software right away—empowering students to model and explore the real world, businesses to excite customers with new products, or organizations to improve productivity with customized tools.”
Development Productivity in Academia, Small Business and Enterprise
Businesses in today's economy can't sustain a traditional cycle of software development that often takes so long the requirements or budgets change before the code is complete. Rev enables rapid delivery of applications—integrated across the range of information systems already in place—that can adapt to new market realities with low maintenance and enhancement costs. For professional developers, Rev's productivity advantages mean they can compete more aggressively for larger projects and deliver higher quality results in less time.
Mark Pezzo, associate professor of Psychology at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, uses Rev for both his research and teaching. He states, “I’ve found Rev much easier—learning it, teaching it, and implementing it—than any other language or IDE, such as Visual Basic, Silverlight, Flash or Authorware. We're using Rev in several of our experiments, and I'm developing a class to teach students how to create their own research tools. A lot of these tools already exist, but students can only ‘use’ them. The big advantage of using Rev in education is that students can actually ‘create’ the tools they use, which is a more effective way to learn.”
Max Shafer, president of Underdog Educational, is introducing an entirely new generation of young software programmers to Rev. “Rev is so rich with features and supporting products that I don’t need to hire additional programmers. Getting started in Rev is so inexpensive, yet I still have access to animation, databases, graphs and charts, reporting features, and localization. The scripting language is so friendly I plan to have all my fifth graders creating great programs using the new revMedia.”
Three Editions for Varying Projects and Experience Levels
Rev 4.0 is offered in three editions for individual customer needs, programming experience and project requirements. To get started, authors simply link to the revWeb plugin from their Web page; their content quickly downloads, much like Flash animations. The free revMedia edition appeals to individual creators and educators who require powerful features with little to no investment. revMedia’s ease of use and low barrier to entry attract the next generation of programmers, those with little formal programming experience but a desire to build Web applications, games, and multimedia projects.
The revStudio edition features 100 additional commands and keywords for professional functionality, and is frequently used to create commercial software, standalone desktop applications, and in-house productivity improvements. Users can create rich, Web-enabled apps for multiple platforms with a single click, and harness the power of multi-user database systems. revEnterprise is the most powerful authoring environment for mission-critical applications. With its enhanced security features, a high-performance internal database engine, and access to RunRev development team support, revEnterprise helps serious programmers create solutions across the enterprise.
Noted author and veteran programmer Wallace Wang has compared Rev alongside the most-established programming languages, and recommends it for even the most sophisticated projects. “The more lines of code you need to write, the longer it will take to create a program, and the more potential for error. By providing commands that solve high-level problems, Rev lets you focus on making your program work rather than forcing you to write, test, and debug multiple lines of code. Given the choice between less wasted time and more functionality (Rev), or more wasted time and less functionality (traditional programming languages like C++ or Java), why would you choose the latter?”

EDINBURGH, Scotland – August 27, 2009 – RunRev Ltd. will introduce the world’s easiest programming language at its annual developers conference September 1 in Edinburgh, featuring the world’s first Web-based development tool that can deploy to all major browsers on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Noted Web development pioneer Robert Cailliau will introduce the keynote at the RunRevLive.09 Developer’s Conference, addressing the history of the Web, and how new technologies are saving companies substantial sums in development costs, while enabling anyone to write Web 2.0 applications.
Revolution (Rev 4) enables users to create applications using the platform of their choice and deploy to virtually every desktop computer in use today. The technology is an English-like programming language, revTalk, with which both hobbyist and professional programmers can write applications in less time and with less effort than traditional, more costly Web development tools. Casual users can ramp up quickly while advanced users save time by writing up to 90 percent less code than they would in a traditional language.
“Rev 4 is truly ground-breaking because the same, accessible language can be used wherever users wish to present their work, on Web, desktop, and server, replacing an alphabet soup of different languages and conflicting syntax previously required to create full solutions,” said Kevin Miller, RunRev founder and CEO. “Our new Web-based software is designed for those creating both sophisticated software and more straightforward Web applications, whether they possess deep programming expertise or are just starting out.”
Cailliau identifies Rev 4 as one of the most promising new technologies since the introduction of the Web, saying “I’ve seen Web technologies come and go, but Rev 4 delivers on its claims. A simulation of the particle accelerator at CERN that took me weeks to produce in Java was much faster and much less painful to produce in Rev 4.”
RunRevLive.09 Developers Conference
Taking place September 1-4 at the Dynamic Earth exhibition center in Edinburgh, Scotland, RunRevLive.09 will provide attendees an in-depth review and hands-on workshops around Rev 4 programming. WEDNESDAY 22ND JULY 2009
New revMedia 4.0 Public Alpha Test Version Available Today
World's easiest programming language launches on the Web
EDINBURGH (July 22) – The world’s easiest programming language today launched on the Web with the debut of a free "alpha test" version of revMedia 4.0. This new version of the company's popular cross-platform development tool can now deploy to all major browsers on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Users can use revMedia's English-like programming language, revTalk, to write applications in less time and with less effort than traditional, more costly Web development tools.
The revWeb authoring environment and revTalk are modern descendents of natural-language programming technologies such as SmallTalk, Apple's HyperCard, AppleScript, and Adobe Director Lingo.
"HyperCard was one of the original inspirations for the Web." said Robert Cailliau, who co-developed the World Wide Web along with Sir Tim Berners-Lee at CERN. Robert continued, "Today the Web can finally reach its full potential with a modern, powerful development language that honors the best ideas from that original concept."
Cailliau adds, "You can be a total beginner and still produce impressive software quickly. I use revTalk for all my coding needs, and know it goes far beyond programming 'for the rest of us.' Professionals will appreciate the speed with which they can build sophisticated solutions. It is a complete platform that gives you access to the entire Web, plus desktop and even server."
The technology is ground-breaking because the same, accessible language can be used wherever users wish to present their work. Previously, an alphabet soup of different languages and conflicting syntax had to be employed to create full solutions.
revMedia is a fully featured authoring tool that includes an integrated development environment (IDE) for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The product supports popular multimedia formats, vector graphics, powerful visual effects, drop shadows, OS-native look-and-feel, or interfaces with a completely custom skin. revTalk's unique chunk expressions make it easy to process text or crunch data. And for professional programmers, revTalk includes advanced features like object-oriented behaviors and multi-dimensional arrays.
Registration for the revMedia alpha is free and open to everyone. The final shipping version of revMedia will also be free. Users can upgrade to revStudio or revEnterprise if they need access to an advanced tool set, or to on-Rev to host server applications. The company will shortly be introducing a freely available, user-installable server language as part of its strategy to provide a complete English-like development platform for desktop, Web and servers.
The alpha test is available from http://revmedia.runrev.com

April 4, 2008 (EDINBURGH, Scotland) - Linux users have even more choices now when building applications and media presentations for their platform. Today, Runtime Revolution released Revolution 2.9 for Linux, a major new version of the leading cross-platform, rapid application development tool based on natural language.
"In our day-to-day life, we see examples every day where language barriers prevent people from getting the jobs they want, solving problems, and integrating socially," said Bill Marriott, Director of Marketing. "Similarly, the steep learning curve and inscrutable grammar of languages typically used on Linux have been a barrier to those who would like to join the development community on that platform, get things done at work, and adopt Linux technology in their business."
Unlike other programming languages, which rely on obscure symbols and complicated structures, Revolution uses plainly understood words and phrases for the bulk of its operations. This enables casual users to ramp up quickly. Advanced users save considerable time because a single Revolution command performs the equivalent work of pages of other kinds of code. And all users are able to return to the programs they've written months earlier and understand them at-a-glance.
Although Revolution has been available for Linux from its beginning, the feature set of the Linux edition lagged behind other releases. Revolution 2.9 delivers the improved graphics, new language capabilities, and performance enhancements introduced to the product line over the last two-and-a-half years, as well as updating the core engine to take advantage of modern user interface standards of today's Linux platform.
The new Linux version extends the ease-of-programming Macintosh users have enjoyed from the days of HyperCard to one of the hottest emerging platforms. "Over the years, Linux has become increasingly user-friendly and more broadly adopted," said Runtime Revolution CEO Kevin Miller. "It's only appropriate Linux users now enjoy the benefits of the easiest, most understandable programming language ever invented, plain English."
Revolution is the only development tool that enables anyone to create true standalone applications for:
The Revolution architecture enables users to write their application using the platform of their choice and deploy to virtually every desktop computer in use today with a single command. The applications - unlike Java and other environments - automatically assume the correct appearance and behaviors of the target operating system, without special effort on the part of the programmer.
Miller said Revolution empowers Mac developers to read the broadest possible audience, "Your program automatically takes on the Linux GTK look and feel when you create it. It also works the other way. You can write on Linux then deploy to Vista, and it looks just beautiful." Users do not need to have a copy of the target operating system to create applications for it.
Prior to release and throughout the development process, this version of Revolution was thoroughly tested by more than 800 members of the Revolution developer community over a period of several months.
"Because of the vast combinations of hardware, operating systems, capabilities, and uses possible with Revolution, it's essential to have a diverse range of programmers putting it to task in everyday situations before release," said Miller.
"Compared to our previous Linux version, we identified and addressed more than 1,000 issues, as well as making the product easier to use by implementing several enhancement requests," he said.
Among the usability enhancements is an all-new User Guide about twice the size of previous editions, with more examples and walkthroughs, plus in-depth sections on using the deeper features of the product. New users will have substantial resources for building just-in-time business utilities, database front-ends, professional reports, and Web mashups.
Revolution is available in three editions:
Revolution Media (US $49), for beginners and hobbyists, will be available shortly.
Previous owners of Revolution enjoy a discount on upgrades. Those with active maintenance agreements receive this version free-of-charge.
