RunRev Introduces Pre-Alpha of revMobile for the iPhone, Enabling Rapid Application Development of iPhone Apps
revMobile on Track to Slash Development Time of iPhone and iPad Apps by a factor of 10; Video Shows iPhone App Creation in Three Hours
EDINBURGH, Scotland – March 11, 2010 – Software development company Runtime Revolution Ltd today announced the first iteration of its unique revMobile development platform for rapid application development on the Apple iPhone. Available for download today, the first pre-Alpha release enables development of fully functioning iPhone applications with many popular iPhone features:
♣ Multi-Touch – Create stunning interfaces that use gestures. Move multiple objects on screen with multiple fingers or pinch images to zoom in and out.
♣ Accelerometer – Apps respond as you move the phone. It's as simple as using the new accelerationChanged message.
♣ Shake Motion Detection – Detects when the iPhone has been shaken, for use when undoing or resetting a game. Just intercept the new motionStart, motionEnd and motionRelease messages.
♣ Select Photos from your Photo Library – Use the new iPhonePickPhoto command to select a photo using the iPhone image chooser.
RunRev expect to cut development times on the iPhone by a factor of ten with its high-level language and easy development cycle. Developers can watch a video showing development of an app from start to finish in 3 hours 16 minutes, by a novice iPhone developer. Watch the video.
Developers can get started with the pre-Alpha today by downloading the application and reading a discussion of how it was made here. revMobile will support iPhone, iPad, and Windows Mobile and Maemo platforms initially. There is already a pre-Alpha release available for Windows Mobile.
RunRev CEO Kevin Miller said, “We're thrilled to bring this first taste of the future to the iPhone platform. We have a long way to go before this is feature complete, but we are getting a lot of excited and enthusiastic feedback from users, who are astonished at how fast they can create iPhone apps even with a pre-Alpha version, and how powerful this release is already.”
revMobile uses the company’s revTalk programming language, a modern descendant of natural-language technologies such as Apple's HyperCard that enables software construction for everyone. With revMobile, developers will be able to develop and deploy to mobile platforms using a single code base, while being able to take advantage of native features on each device. Additionally developers can reuse code across Windows, Mac OS and Linux desktops, popular Web browsers and on Web servers.
revMobile will create standalone applications for each target platform. Due to current requirements iPhone/iPad apps must be submitted to the Apple App Store for approval, so revMobile will not be available as a Web plugin for mobile Safari or have the ability to execute dynamic code at runtime. The current pre-Alpha for iPhone is not yet able to create Apps for the Apple App Store, although later releases will do so. Windows Mobile and Maemo applications will be able to download and execute dynamic code. Native API support for a number of APIs will be present on all devices.
Developers are invited to join the pre-release program today. The first pre-Alpha for Windows Mobile is now available and additional platforms and revisions will be added over the coming months. The pre-release program starts at $799 and includes a number of early participation benefits. The shipping version of revMobile will be $999.
