Meet the Team: Neil Roger

blog - neil rogerHi! My name is Neil and I've been part of the RunRev family for about 3 years. I joined RunRev soon after graduating from a course in Audio Technology with Multimedia at Glasgow Caledonian University. I am part of the filming team and my official role is post production video engineer. This entails me working on all the video related projects within the company. These can range from promo videos to tutorial videos and most recently recording the RunRev11 conference and editing the videos afterwards for DVD and Simulcast distribution.  My main focus with RunRev is working with a company called Eurotalk.

Eurotalk is a language learning company that produces a vast range of video based interactive learning products that have all been created using LiveCode. LiveCode applications have been implemented at every stage of production and it has allowed the filming/final stage processes to be streamlined which results in a speedy turnaround from start to finish. I could not imagine trying to complete a Eurotalk project without LiveCode as it would take many days to manually edit the 1000's of individual phrases used on each product whereas with the use of LiveCode it takes a matter of hours.

Don’t just take my word for it: Andrew Ashe, Managing Director of Eurotalk talks about the relationship in this video (which I’m happy to say is one of mine).

Out of office hours I enjoy spending time with my fiancée, walking our puppy Pancake and 'geeking' it up in my own computers at home (much to my fiancée’s dismay).

Recently I attempted a bit of coding myself and was pleasantly surprised at what I could produce using LiveCode with having no previous programming knowledge. I successfully created a small application called 'Target IP' which is an external IP retrieval tool that will send an message containing the computer's current external IP to a specified email address. So, if your computer is ever stolen, you will automatically be emailed the IP address of whoever next turns it on, which you can pass on to the authorities.

Using LiveCode I was able to produce this application in around 45mins.

The app has been picked up by Softpedia, Softoxi and Brothersoft and I’ve had hundreds of downloads already. It’s free: check it out .

I went into this project with the outlook that I wouldn’t be able to get very far but with LiveCode’s easy to use language , in-depth lessons portal and fantastic forum community it was a pleasure to code. I look forward to my next LiveCode project.

Editor’s note:

We’re really proud of what Neil has achieved with Target IP. Neil is, as he himself says, a complete geek, but he’s not a coder, and he’s made a really clever, really useful app in no time at all. He’s looking forward to writing his next app, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he comes up with.
