Recently, Kevin Miller CEO of RunRev Ltd. returned to visit his old school in Edinburgh and share his experience with a new generation of Computer Science students

by Caroline Finlay

I recently accompanied Kevin Miller when he visited his old school James Gillespies High School to meet and talk to pupils in the computer science classes aged from 14-18. This was a great opportunity for Kevin and he was excited to share his experience in business with the students.

He told them how he started developing the idea for LiveCode whilst at school, in the very classroom he was standing in, and how he crafted the idea through school and put it into action as soon as he left. He talked about the bumps in the road which every new business experiences and how important it is not to be put off by them, but to stay true to your dream and vision. He described where RunRev is today and the vision for the future. A key message for the students was that whilst some may go on to University it is possible to become an entrepreneur and start your own business instead of University or as well as University.

Kevin at Gillespies School

One of the 15 year old students told Kevin that he and 20 friends had started a software company which developed games. They had identified funding sources and were working on their business plan. Kevin was delighted to extend an invitation to the student to call him at any time if he ever needed any guidance or mentoring. He told me afterwards

"its really cool to be able to connect with a new generation in this way, and perhaps be of some help in the future to develop somebody's career"

Pupils

The school is using LiveCode in all of its computer science classes to teach student programming. RunRev is committed to education and from September will be working with a group of Teachers in Edinburgh who will form a steering group for the use of LiveCode in Schools.
