Hearing is Believing: Introducing Audio to RevSelect

by Lynn Fredricks

With the exception of some very creative tactile response peripherals, your projects will always be limited by the number of senses they can evoke in creating an immersive experience.

Runtime Revolution lets you combine any number of visual elements to create a high impact interface, but did you know it also allows you to integrate audio? This is really easy, you just need to go to the "File" menu in Revolution and choose "import as audioclip". Then do

play audioclip "myclip.wav"

Alternatively you can use a player:

Set the filename of player "myPlayer" to filepath

Thats it!

So easy, but such a difference

With the exception of some very creative tactile response peripherals, your projects will always be limited by the number of senses they can evoke in creating an immersive experience. Runtime Revolution lets you combine any number of visual elements to create a high impact interface, but it also allows you to integrate audio. How important is audio to the overall presentation of your project? If you are creating a desktop application, you are probably okay to just rely on the standard audio warnings supported by the operating system. On the other hand, if you create multimedia presentations or games of any kind, audio can play a critical role in making a sale. For this reason, Runtime Revolution Ltd welcomes new audio partners Mojo Audio and Meshbox Music to its RevSelect vendor program.

Arcade and Sci-Fi

Tech Tip: Mojo Audio files are in .ogg format. Revolution needs these converted to a compatible format, such as .wav. This is very easy, one way to do it is to use the free Audacity converter.

Mojo Audio develops sound effects packs that are extremely useful both for casual games and for adventure/strategy games. The first packs introduced by Mojo Audio on RevSelect are Explosions Audio Pack, Arcade Audio Pack, Sci-fi Weapons Audio Pack, Interface Audio Pack, Motor Audio Pack and Magic Spells Audio Pack - each of which costs only $20. Mojo Audio is already well known in the indie game developer community as a supplier of high quality audio content. As demonstrated by the addictive Drops game, built with Runtime Revolution and DerBrill's Animation Engine, the casual game market is well within the reach of Revolution developers. Look for future collaborative efforts between Mojo Audio and Derbrill!

Adventure gaming too!

Meshbox Music created licensable audio soundtracks that are designed for the adventure/strategy game market. Runtime Revolution is a proven vehicle for this market as demonstrated by the success of Alida - a game that utilizes audio significantly to create its unique atmosphere. One game that could be easily created in Revolution (but sadly created with the now defunct mTropolis) is the A-Sharp game King of Dragon Pass. King of Dragon Pass, available for Mac OS and Windows, utilizes text, still graphics and immersive audio - no real time 3D or advanced artificial intelligence - but highly playable and enjoyable. To see the effect of immersive soundtracks, download either game and turn off the audio - you will discover just how much the audio affects the total presentation of the game. You can transform your game by incorporating both "local" sounds such as sound effects as well as location based soundtracks. The first Meshbox Music collections available through RevSelect are fantasy soundtracks: Music from Elven Village Volumes 1 & 2 and Music from Halfling Village Volumes 1 & 2. Each volume of eight soundtracks is normally $45 but available through RevSelect for only $20 for a limited time. You can listen to 15 second previews of all tracks.
