revUp Reaches 100 Issues
No fewer than 100 revUp issues have been sent out, a look back at some favorite articles

by Heather Nagey

It's an astonishing thought. This newsletter has been going since May 2006, and we've published no fewer than 100 editions. That represents well over 1000 hours of thoughtful work by all the fantastic contributors of articles, not to mention the effort that goes into formatting and sending out the emails to the community. I hope it has been a useful resource for all you developers out there, and look forward to continuing to provide news, comment, technical articles and examples for years to come! We've had contributions from many of our users, as well as regular articles from the team here at RR. On behalf of everyone at RR, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed. I very much enjoy editing this newsletter and putting it together for you all to read. I'd like to take a look back at some of my personal favorites. Maybe you'll find something new to you.

Most Useful

Some articles turn out to be so beneficial that they are moved into the main website as tutorials. Notable in this category, Trevor DeVore's article on Arrays, Devin Asay on Unicode, and the inimitable Mark Waddingham on External Writing for the Uninitiated.

GlobeMost Beautiful

Top in this category has to be Scott Rossi's "Globe, A Glass and Galactic Appeal" article. Also worth a mention, Ben Beaumont with his Multimedia walkthrough for version 4.0. I have to include Lego Mindstorms here, just because of the amazing photographic panorama's of the 2009 conference taken by the author, Ian Wood.

Outstanding series

An excellent basic tutorial and still mostly relevant even though it was written for version 2.7, was cannonthe "Cannonball" series contributed by Robert Cailliau. Try it yourself and see if you end up with a firing cannon! The ever popular and entertaining Andre Garzia gave us his "Rev on Rockets" series, an early exploration of using LiveCode (then Rev) as a cgi application.

Recent contributions

Among the more notable recent articles is this fine one on using the Server environment by Ralf Bitter. If you're into AI, take a look at A* and the 8-Puzzle Game by Hans-Schmidt Cornelius.

In addition to all the technical articles, this has also been a place where new releases are announced, features explained, conference invitations extended, and we kept you up to date on all the new Marketplace products coming on board. Its a place where the CEO comments on trends in the development scene, and lets you know about major events in the RunRev world.

HN3I cannot end this overview without mentioning my all time favourite article, published on April 1st this year. Darth, I hope you will look in on our April conference in San Jose...

Back in May 2006, in the very first edition, Kevin Miller expressed the wish that this newsletter should be a place to

"... share ideas with other developers and learn from them as well... A community spread around the world. Each developer a node in an intelligent network, sharing and promoting a common goal of creating new applications."

I think we acheived that.
