Honda Buggies
The Geek Grand Prix: answering the burning question, can developers drive?

by Mark Taoilinn

It is often rumored that we chain our developers to their desks, only allowing them brief respites from coding to eat and sleep. It is true that we work the team hard, but from time to time, we do release the chains in the interests of health, sanity, and avoiding accusations of slavery.

Recently, almost the entire RunRev team had a "teambuilding" day out, during which we spent a day driving hot-rod Honda Buggies around a muddy field. A good time was had by all, and I had the pleasure of being the official photographer of the entire event.

Seeing the team race around the track in modified lawnmowers was a revelation. A strong competitive streak was revealed, especially in Messrs Beaumont, Bouchot, and Williams. The rules however were strict, if you spun the buggy 360 degrees, you were disqualified from the heat, which sadly meant that our illustrious leader Kevin Miller Did Not Finish in the final. Pictures speak louder than words, so without further ado, here are some of the best moments, captured on film. Click any of the images to zoom.

Winners

The Winners Podium

1st Place, Benjamin "the Beast" Beaumont, 2nd Place, Mark "how did that happen" Waddingham, 3rd Place David "all those years playing Grand Turismo were not wasted" Williams

In conclusion: it appears that programmers both can and will drive, but customer service managers are in the slow but sure category. Sadly, my snap of Heather Nagey getting stuck in the mud and being pushed up the hill was too blurred to use. Warm congratulations go to the winners, and we are all looking forward to the next team day out!
