Join the Revolution 2.7.5 Open Community Beta

At no time in the history of Runtime Revolution has a single year brought on so much change for the better than 2006. And the first cool and wintry winds of November also bring more for the better - better community participation to making Revolution the environment where you want to spend your day coding.

Revolution 2.7.5 entered into internal testing and to the Enterprise Improve list recently. Along with the other winds of change in 2006, such as the entirely new graphics architecture and Universal Binary support implemented, the industry itself is changing - Linux is stronger than ever, Microsoft Windows Vista has been released to manufacturers, and Apple’s 10.5 OS is around the corner. Revolution as an environment has to serve you, our developer community, in this changing market.

We’d like to welcome all users to participate in the new open community beta program for Revolution 2.7.5.

The Birth of a Concept

Feedback from you through 2006 set us looking hard at improving the overall robustness of the 2.7.x release. A group of ardent supporters of an open beta process led by developer Bill Marriott presented us with a proposition to help facilitate and manage the open beta process. Such an open beta process requires someone reputable, dedicated, intimately familiar with Revolution, with experience of leading beta testing programs.

Introducing Bill Marriott

Bill worked with computers since his college days, then moved into technical journalism. He worked for Apple Computer’s Claris subsidiary as technical lead for FileMaker Pro, HyperCard and other programs. He gained experience of managing knowledge bases, online forums, and beta test programs; he also founded a technical journal for advanced users. Next he went to work for America Online, managing their multimedia content-provider tools and helping AOL keep pace with innovations on the Worldwide Web. After AOL, he joined Microsoft and guided the migration of the Microsoft Network from a proprietary service integrated into Windows 95, to a flat-rate, unlimited-use ISP based on Internet Explorer, to the open web portal it is today.

“Revolution is a ‘secret weapon’ for many of us,” Bill said. “It’s the best option out there for rapid, cross-platform application development. Recent versions have been very aggressive about innovative features, but now it’s time to put laser-like focus on fit-and-finish issues that may have discouraged some people from embracing recent releases.”

Runtime Revolution Ltd eagerly welcomes Bill as our Community Quality Partner, with the mission of ensuring product quality meets the highest standards in our new releases.

Bill On Quality

We worked with Bill to immediately reinvigorate expectations on quality:

* Respond meaningfully to community concerns through official Revolution venues like the Revolution Forums
* Get fresh eyes looking at the product to truly “shake the tree” and enable you to ship robust solutions based on 2.7.5
* Get more users familiar with, and confident about BugZilla, the community based feedback tool for reporting issues
* Assist in developing a more meaningful, community-based beta process

Revolution 2.7.5 - Free Update to 2.7.x Licensees

The focus on Revolution 2.7.5 is on core issues such as setup and install, crashing, IDE behavior, and stress testing. The new version will also finally bring the newest Revolution to the Linux platform.

Feedback on new features and wish-list items will be accepted, however our expectations are that those are outside of this release and should be directed towards the Suggestions forum.

The most exciting news of all: Revolution 2.7.5 will be a free update. If you had an active Revolution maintenance plan as of February 1, 2006, or if you purchased any version of Revolution 2.7, you will receive Revolution 2.7.5 at no charge.

What You Can Do for Revolution

Now is the time to make the next version of Revolution the best it can be:

* Please go here to request that we send you the pre-release version of Revolution 2.7.5 today
* Visit http://support.runrev.com/bugdatabase and become familiar with BugZilla, the tracking mechanism we use for bug reports
* Join us at http://forums.runrev.com to see the new discussion boards we’ve set up exclusively for beta testers. This is the official venue for all communication about the beta.

If you’re not already a user of BugZilla or the forums, please register so that you can participate. Bill will be posting new information about the pre-release versions, testing tips, bug-reporting tips, and special testing requests throughout the beta test.

You depend on us for a great development platform, and we depend on you for feedback on how we’re doing. Please log in to the forums above and give us as much information about your system setup and as much detail as you can about the bugs you find. We need to hear from you! If you don’t report it we can’t fix it.

Bill is bringing his enormous experience to bear to make Revolution 2.7.5 the best it can be. Will you?
