Gearing up for an iOS Launch
Upcoming release, App store submission, new tutorial series

by Kevin Miller

With our first official launch for iOS just weeks away, we thought this would be a good time to update you on progress on this exciting platform. It has been great to so many new faces join the LiveCode community. So if you're new to the platform: welcome on board! We're incredibly excited to bring you this exciting new set of capabilities to deploy to mobile devices.

App Store Ready
Our corporate, IT and in-house developer customers have been enjoying our iOS support for a number of months now. Following on from that success and in the light of Apple's recent decision to allow third party development tools, we're pleased to announce that we've completed the changes to the platform necessary to submit to the app store. That release will be rolled out to our pre-release customers very shortly now.

You can see our first application in the app store: Sheep Herder. It may not be the most sophisticated game you've seen, but then again, it was created in 3 hours and 16 minutes.

Feature Set
Thanks very much to everyone who filled out our recent iOS feature set survey. We got some outstanding feedback in that survey which has been really useful in shaping the feature set development. There are a number of additional features which we plan to include in the first shipping version of this product. We are committed to providing an outstanding development tool for iOS and will be adding support for a comprehensive set of features giving access to many of iOS's unique capabilities in a rapid program of rolling updates.

Judging by the survey feedback and the quality of the applications we've seen to date, it is clear our customers would like a stable platform to ship the applications they have already completed sooner rather than later. We are focusing on delivering that first and will do so within weeks. While this means that native theme support will not be present in this first version, it does mean that many of the beautifully skinned, outstanding iOS apps written using LiveCode will start appearing in the App Store very soon. We will be working hard on developing the feature set as much as possible over the coming months, including adding support for native themes and will be making these new features available in regular updates to the platform. And yes, we'll be bringing support for another important mobile platform not too long after iOS, so you'll be able to use a single code base to support multiple devices.

Build An App Series
As we gear up to launch we're going to build an application from start to finish together with our customers. We know a lot of you are just getting started with LiveCode iOS Deployment Pack and we want to help. We'll be running a series of videos, blog and website posts that detail every step of the process. You'll be able to watch the entire application development lifecycle from start to finish, download the code and assets, make suggestions, give us feedback and ask questions. Why not follow along and develop your own application in parallel? At the end of it we'll have an application that we'll take right through to submission in the App Store. We'll make the application free, so you'll be able to download that and try it out on your own iOS devices too.

We'll be announcing the start of this series in the next few days, so stay tuned and get ready to follow along with us. We know this is going to be a great way to introduce you to building iOS applications with the LiveCode platform.
