FAQ (Revolution Customers)

Frequently asked questions for existing customers

Who is this FAQ for?

This FAQ is for anyone who had a version of the product prior to version 4.5. This includes customers using revMedia, revStudio, revEnterprise, revMobile and revServer.

What is LiveCode?

Rev is now called LiveCode. There is only one edition of the product, which comes with either a professional, personal or educator license. A number of new bundles carefully targeted to specific customers are now available. All deployment options, including the Web, desktop, server and mobile OSes are now sold as Deployment Extension Packs to the main LiveCode product. The programming language associated with the product is also called LiveCode. The company name and branding remains unchanged as RunRev. Thus you may now correctly refer to the product as LiveCode from RunRev.

Why have you changed the name?

The new name more accurately conveys the benefits that are at the core of the LiveCode platform: a fast, compile-free workflow. This core message is more tightly associated with the unique selling points that are so important to our customer base, including enabling a highly productive workflow, outstanding ease-of-use, very-high-level English-like language and flexible delivery to multiple platforms and devices from a single code base.

We found that since introducing the “Rev” prefix we have introduced many new products and services, notably including revMobile and revServer. The product lineup was rapidly becoming complex and difficult to explain. These products are now simply deployment packs for LiveCode. This new lineup is much easier for both existing and new customers to understand. LiveCode better conveys our mission, focus and technology. The LiveCode name will be easier to locate in Internet searches. Rather than searching for “Rev” or “Revolution” which are buried with other unrelated items, or searching individually for “revMedia”, “revStudio” or “revMobile”, you can now perform a single search for “LiveCode”.

What about the brand recognition from the previous name?

Much of the brand recognition we have to date centers around the company name “RunRev”, which is not changing. We haven’t changed the product name in the decade since its introduction (we have introduced variants but they have always had “Rev” or “Revolution” in the name). We believe that by centering all focus on a single, searchable word, the new brand will quickly overtake the brand recognition previously associated with “Rev” or “Revolution” which was actually quite difficult to brand.

Where do I find my license code?

You no longer need to enter a license code into the product. Instead you can simply log into the product using your account details and the product will be activated automatically. You only need to do this once to activate your product, thereafter you will be able to use it whether you are on or offline. Alternatively you may choose to download your license file from your customer account area which will allow you to activate the product without an Internet connection.

How much does LiveCode cost?

Developers can get started with LiveCode for as little as $99, which is a full-featured version for personal non-profit use. Our pricing is structured around your specific project and budget, with various deployment packs available based on your requirements.

We offer LiveCode Deployment Packs for Web, Windows/Mac desktop, Linux desktop, server, or a single mobile platform. We also offer professional packs that include several or all platforms with or without membership of the LiveCode Developer Program, and special licenses for educators.

What are the main changes for non-profit / personal use?

You may now purchase LiveCode for personal use, or as an educator, starting at $99. This license may not be used for any sort of commercial development or for-profit distribution of software or services. This license comes with a single deployment option of your choice: Web, Win/Mac desktop, Linux desktop, server, or a single mobile OS. Distribution of applications is strictly for non-profit purposes only, standalone applications will display a splash screen for 5 seconds on startup, which states that the application is for non-profit distribution only and the server option limits the number of simultaneous connections. LiveCode now includes the full object and language feature set that was previously only available in revEnterprise, including database access, the data grid, secure sockets and much more. Previously both revMedia and revStudio had a restricted feature set. You can deploy to a single platform with the Personal License, if you want to deploy to additional platforms you may purchase additional copies. For example, if you want to deploy to the Web and iOS devices then you may purchase two copies of the personal license for $198.

What are the main changes for higher education?

In addition to being able to purchase the Personal License (see above), educators now have an option to buy LiveCode Educator Pro for $299, a package that includes all deployment options including the server and mobile platforms. Distribution of created software is strictly on a non-profit basis, standalone applications will have a splash screen on startup that states this limitation, and the server has a limited number of simultaneous connections.

Colleges, universities and valid higher education organizations may now purchase a LiveCode University Lab Pack, which costs $50 per seat with in a minimum purchase of 20 seats. This package includes all deployment options including the server and mobile platforms. Distribution of created software is strictly on a non-profit basis, standalone applications will have a splash screen on startup that states this limitation, and the server has a limited number of simultaneous connections. Purchase of a lab pack comes with a coupon code allowing your students to purchase individual licenses for use at home for $50.

If you have an existing Rev educational license you will be entitled to upgrade pricing. Please visit our Store to view the appropriate options for you.

What are the main changes for K-12 and high school?

K-12 (primary and high school in the UK) educators may now purchase a LiveCode K-12 Classroom Pack for $25 per seat with a minimum purchase of 20 seats. This package includes all deployment options including the server and mobile platforms. Distribution of created software is strictly on a non-profit basis, standalone applications will have a splash screen on startup that states this limitation, and the server has a limited number of simultaneous connections.

We are committed to supporting the educator community and so we have introduced a new K-12 scholarship program, which allows you to deploy LiveCode free in budget-constrained K-12 and high-school environments. – please contact us for more information about this program. Purchase of a lab pack comes with a coupon code allowing your students to purchase individual licenses for use at home for $25.

If you have an existing Rev educational license you will be entitled to upgrade pricing. Please visit our Store to view the appropriate options for you.

Please describe the main changes for professional use?

A LiveCode Commercial License is now available for $299. This comes with a single deployment option of your choice out of the box: Windows and Mac desktops, Linux desktops or Web. If you wish to add more options these are $199 each. Additionally you may now add a Server Deployment Pack for $299 (formerly revServer), and each individual mobile device platform may be added for $299 each (formerly sold in a package as revMobile).

LiveCode now includes all the language features that were previously present in revEnterprise. It no longer includes access to the improve-rev mailing list, which has become the LiveCode Developer Program (and includes new benefits).

Anyone with a valid revStudio or revEnterprise license or existing revStudio or revEnterprise multi-user pack is entitled to upgrade pricing. You may choose to upgrade each deployment option you enjoyed with your previous license at the upgrade price for each, or you may choose to drop deployment options to reduce the price. For details of upgrade pricing, please see our online store.

How many platforms may I author on with a LiveCode license?

All licenses are either per named individual or per machine. That means you may develop with your copy of LiveCode on multiple machines, virtual machines and platforms provided you are the only user. Alternatively you may install it on a single machine and allow multiple people to use that machine. We believe these license options provide the best possible flexibility.

What is the new LiveCode Developer Program?

The new LiveCode Developer Program is intended to allow us to provide dramatically better service and support for our professional developers. See the LiveCode Developer Program for more details, terms and conditions.

Are you renaming the “rev*” libraries within the product?

No. These libraries were prefixed with “rev” in order to denote RunRev provided them. As the company name is not changing this prefix remains appropriate.

I’m not a LiveCode Developer Program member. Where do I send bug reports?

You may now send bug reports to bugs@runrev.com. Your request will be logged but we will not send you any other response unless we require more information to verify your issue. If you would like to search the bug database, submit bugs or comments to it yourself, get a response to your bug reports or have bug reports prioritized, you will need to sign up to our LiveCode Developer Program (see above).

What happens if I have a renewal pack that is still valid?

Nothing will change until the end of the term of your existing renewal pack. As always, we will honor our promises to our existing customers and we will continue to provide the equivalent service and updates that you have paid for until the end of that term. For example if you have a revStudio license which expires in 2011, then you will receive LiveCode 4.5 with Web, Win/Mac desktop and Linux desktop deployment. You will continue to have access to the bug database. You will however now gain access to the entire language and object feature set previously only available in revEnterprise, for free!

For example, if you have a revEnterprise license that expires in 2011, you will receive access to a legacy version of the LiveCode Developer Program membership, this includes access to the new livecode-developer mailing list (a replacement for improve-rev), pre-releases and the bug database. But you will not gain access to the new Quick Incidents as these were previously not included in the benefits we offered with revEnterprise.

I’ve purchased revMobile, what does that entitle me to?

You will continue to be entitled to access to all the pre-releases and the shipping version of all the mobile Deployment Packs on all mobile device platforms we support. We are committed to ensuring that early adopters always get the best possible deal. As a thank you for your support as an early adopter, we are delighted to announce that we will now include a license for every new mobile device platform we add in the future. This will be free of charge to all revMobile early adopters. Additionally, we will add 18 months of updates for each mobile device platform instead of the previously advertised 12 months. This will be measured from the date of the first shipping version for each platform. Please stay tuned for more news on the additional platforms we are adding support for.
