Web or Mobile?
Recent research shows we use our phones more than the web

By Heather Nagey

I stumbled across an article recently that on first look caused my eyebrows to entangle with my hair. We actually spend more time per day now using smart phones and tablet devices than we do browsing the web! What does this mean? Is the internet doomed? Well, hardly.

On reading the article more carefully, it all started to make more sense. Its not that we are using the web less... we are just using mobile devices more. We spend a whopping 94 minutes a day using mobile apps, *as well as* a fairly massive 72 minutes cruising the web. The latter figure has not changed a lot over the last year or so, but the mobile figure is still growing.

That's a massive 2 hours and 45 minutes with our noses glued to a screen or walking blindly into traffic.

The really interesting part is what we are actually doing in that 94 minutes of quality mobile time. I'll let you guess... are people earnestly answering mail,or catching up on office work? Are they managing their businesses or working on... well, anything? No, not really. We spend most of that time, you guessed it, in Facebook or playing games.

where the time goes

What does this mean for us, as app developers? Well, if you're in the games market, great. You've a huge potential audience, and its growing all the time. If you're not... your app had better play nice with Facebook.
