Ten Thumbs Goes Universal Binary

by Robin Miller

Keeping your software up-to-date is always important, but when you see hardware like the new Intel Macs updating becomes a real joy. It’s a particular necessity with an application like Ten Thumbs, which is partly targeted at new computer users.

Making a Universal Binary application is easy with the latest version of Revolution, already available as a preview release to our Enterprise customers. Simply check the “Mac OS X (Universal)” check box in the Standalone Application Settings dialogue, then build! Because Revolution already stores most of your application data in a cross-platform compatible manner, there isn’t a big increase in size for a Universal application (you only add an extra engine), which means for Ten Thumbs approximately an extra 2MB uncompressed, and a negligible change in size once compressed. Watch this space for more news on the final release of Revolution for Universal Binaries!

Of course, it’s no good running natively on Mac Intel if your customers don’t know about it. Which means that any new Universal app will want to get into the Mac Logo Program. This means getting licensed by Apple, which is a pretty straightforward process (full details on their website). We’ve added the Universal logo to the Ten Thumbs website, and are updating our physical packaging to include it as well.

We have also updated our Google Adwords campaign to include new wording to cover this release, which displays in relevant Mac ads. This has resulted in a small increase (about 10%) in our click-through rate.
