Community Initiatives
Open Source is already at work in our community, with lots of activity going on to arrange meetups, post blogs and more

By Heather Laine

It's fantastic and very exciting to see the support and enthusiasm for Next Generation LiveCode in our user community. We asked you to tell everyone... and you have really taken up the challenge!

Tell Everybody

Already we are seeing cooperative initiatives being set up to support OSS, with everything from brand new meetups, fresh blogs, tweets and posts, to users starting to organise feature lists and discuss who might want to tackle what area of engine additions. In this article I'm listing meetups I know of - get involved and if there isn't one in your area what about setting one up? I'd also like to highlight Peter Wood's new blog, 1001 things to do with LiveCode. There is so much to cover, I'm really struggling to get it all into this weeks newsletter!

1001 Things To Do With LiveCode

This is a really nice looking new blog put together by Peter Wood. With 22 entries in 2 days, it is collecting new entries almost hourly showing neat things you can do with LiveCode. What I especially like about this blog is that it includes real life useage. There are solutions put together by users to enable specific things for themselves, as well as major commercial apps by professional companies. I love the "where's my car" tracker... I'm not the only person who lives in fear of totally losing my vehicle when I park!

I'm going to show you the image from the Vox Pop kiosk at Tate Modern, just because its so striking:

Vox Pop Kiosk

If you've got a neat app you'd like to share with the world, send a description and screenshot to Peter and he'll put it up.

Meetups

We've had a flurry of new meetups announced, as well as several people expressing an interest in trying to set one up in their area. Read on to see if there is one near you and how you can get involved.

Feb 25th, Google Headquarters California, leader Scott Rossi

Scott has this message for you:

Hello LiveCoders!

The LiveCode meetup at Google is on! The date will be Monday Feb 25, 6:30 - 8:30PM PST. Google headquarters is located in Mountain View CA, near the 101 freeway. Directions to the actual building will be provided once the room is finalized (Google owns a lot of buildings).

A few folks have asked about the possibility of doing remote presentations and/or listening in. We're waiting to find out what services Google can provide. Worst case, we might try to arrange some kind of Ustream or similar connection. More details to come.

The current plan for the event is two parts: the first 30 - 45 min or so will be allotted for an informal introduction to LiveCode for folks who haven't used the platform or have questions about it. The remaining time is available for you to share a project you're working on and/or discuss your development issues. (I have a few things myself that I think folks might be interested in seeing.) If you would like to make a presentation, please contact me off list so I can arrange a schedule.

Free registration for the event is setup here.

To the folks who contacted me directly, please use the above form so we can keep track of the number of people attending.

Looking forward to meeting up :-)
