Cloud Up Your App
Two new case studies and a very special hosting offer for you

by Heather Laine

Cloud services and server interaction is an ever growing area of awareness for apps. Whether you want to store data, show data, play music/video, view webpages, show updating images or share documents, some degree of server interaction is a component of the vast majority of modern apps. Having a Server implementation of LiveCode can be a huge asset, sharing the same code as your app and integrating for a seamless user experience.

We're proud to share with you two recent new case studies we have received showing how LiveCode can be used in this setting.

Mats Astrom, Frontwalker

"Mutual NDA agreements are often a part of our consultancy assignments, especially when the assignment requires that we take part of our customer business data and documentation. These documents, as well as documents produced within the project need be shared among project members.

To make sure that all project documents are at all times available to authorized project members we needed some kind of cloud solution and we would have had quite a few of them to choose from had it not been for the NDA we just signed.

Even though Cloud Service Providers ensure encrypted network traffic/data storage, the actual server storing the information might very well reside in a country whose legislation we know little or nothing about. We therefore developed a cloud solution for our consultancy firm using LiveCode & LiveCode Server which runs on our own server.

On the client side there is a MacOS X desktop app, a Windows desktop app and an iPad app. The apps upload and sync documents using SSL and iRev-scripted web services to access the server document repository and database. Hence, all customer and project documents are in a secure place and available to all concerned

LiveCode was our natural choice, we were able to develop client side apps for MacOS, Windows and iOS as well as server side web services using the same code base. We would not have considered developing our system had it not been for the multi-platform capabilities in LiveCode, it would simply have been too costly".

David Beck MD, Rotunda Software
"Our volunteers were becoming increasingly frustrated because of poor communication and mismanagement in scheduling, such as being scheduled for two shifts on one day, in different departments, locations or while they were on vacation, etc. We found no viable software tools on the market which addressed our requirements and needed to develop an automated system quickly and effectively. It had to be able to handle the complexity of scheduling, be available from the browser as a Cloud Based Service (SaaS), deliver a great user experience for volunteers to check their schedules and it had to offer best value.

We chose LiveCode because it addressed all of our needs, it is cross platform, can run on the server side, was an ideal choice for our thick-client and cloud based software architecture. Moreover, it is a pleasure to work with LiveCode's English-like programming language, and the speed of development which can be achieved with LiveCode meant that our SaaS app was up and running very quickly, in addition our upfront and on-going costs of implementing new features is very low. The time from new feature conception to implementation is often days, where as other more traditional environments it would be weeks or months. Also, by leveraging LiveCode on Linux, we are able to reuse some of our client logic on the server side, which has proved incredibly powerful. "
