Rev 4.5 Progress
Developer Preview 3 now Available with Multiple Enhancements

by Heather Nagey

As those of you with a revEnterprise license may already be aware, Rev 4.5 dp3 became available for download on Tuesday. If you have a current revEnterprise license you can download it via "check for updates" under your Help menu, or from the links given on the improve-rev discussion list. But before you do, perhaps you might find this article useful reading.

What is a dp release?
This is a good question and one that deserves an answer. We have many new revEnterprise license holders, and some of you seem confused by this concept. It's a developer preview. This means it is a work in progress. It is not a gm (gold master), and if you like stability and expected behavior from your applications, it may not be for you. You might want to stick with 4.0 gm-1 until we actually release 4.5 gm. If you like to live on the cutting edge, see how new features are shaping up, influence our developers and let us know how the new features actually work out in practice, then download our dp releases, and give us feedback on the improve list or via bugzilla. But please, back up your work before you start, and don't use a dp release for production work unless you are very very sure it is behaving as you expect it to.

Why do we do it like this?
Dp releases give us and you a chance to communicate. You get to use the latest features ahead of anyone else, and you can tell us if they aren't quite what you were looking for, or suggest improvements. They give you a snapshot of where we are at, and you can see the progress we are making towards the next full release.

How can I get the dp releases?
You need an up to date revEnterprise license. If yours has lapsed, you can get an update here. If you have a revStudio license, you can upgrade it to revEnterprise here. Assuming you have a valid license, go to the Help menu, then "check for updates" and you should see that dp-3 is available to download. For those of you on Linux, or if you have any difficulty getting the update via "check for updates" full download links to the dp releases are published on the improve-list.

So what's in dp-3?
This release is mostly fixes and improvements, thanks to the great feedback received from you, the users. A whole slew of issues you reported against dp-2 have been fixed. If you have started using the new features in dp-2, this release is going to make the experience smoother for you. Database drivers have also received attention, with updates to Oracle, ODBC and SQLite. LibURL now resolves host names in a non-blocking manner.

Where's my new Field Object?
Its coming. Don't worry, we haven't forgotten, or stopped working on it. This will be a major overhaul to the field, and we want to get as much in there as possible, we've already made excellent progress with it. Stay tuned for the next dp...
