revMobile Coming Soon
Free Your Apps with the next big Rev Development

by Kevin Miller

You already know that Rev is the most flexible, powerful, cross platform solution for rapid development out there. I'm delighted to be able to announce that later this year, Rev will be going mobile! We will be introducing a brand new product, revMobile , which will initially support Maemo (Nokia smartphone), Windows Mobile and the iPhone. With this addition we add another vital deployment option to the Rev platform. Rev and the revTalk language can now be used to deploy on the desktop on Windows, Mac and Linux, popular Web browsers on all three platforms, the server and now mobile devices.

revMobile will be a brand new product with its own development environment. It will be based on the language you already know and love, revTalk. You'll be able to take your existing stacks and run them in revMobile. Of course you may need to change the layout and rework them to take advantage of mobile specific features.

How it will work

The new revMobile will allow stacks to be authored and compiled to standalone applications on each mobile platform. The standalone application builder will incorporate the ability to apply settings and build for each of the target platforms.

In order to test and debug your work, you will need to have the appropriate development kit for the target mobile platform installed. These kits are supplied by the mobile vendors and include the appropriate simulator. Additionally, to sell commercial applications, you may also be required to be a registered developer for the target platform and obtain the necessary approval for your application. For example, while the revMobile product can create applications that comply technically with the requirements for Apple's app store, you will still be required to ensure that your specific application complies with the store policies and is approved by Apple.

Rev on the iPhone

Rev stacks will be compiled as an iPhone compatible standalone application which can be installed just like other iPhone apps created by traditional methods.

Due to restrictions on the iPhone platform, we will not be implementing a browser plugin for mobile Safari, or a "player" that can run stacks, as Apple's current licensing agreement does not allow applications that execute arbitrary code at runtime. Running stacks as files or by downloading them will not be possible. Your standalone application must provide fixed functionality which can be assessed at the time of submission in the Apple App store. We will be making changes to the core architecture so that applications are compiled at build time rather than at runtime to the extent necessary for compliance.

There will be support for access to some of the native iPhone APIs. We are currently assessing what degree of native API support to include in the first version. It will remain up to the developer to ensure that their application content and functionality of their specific application are in compliance.

Rev on Windows Mobile & Maemo

revMobile running on Windows Mobile

Rev stacks can be compiled as standalones for Windows Mobile. Additionally it will be possible to run stacks from the file system or by downloading them.

There will be support for access to some of the native Windows Mobile and Maemo APIs. We are currently assessing what degree of native API support to include in the first version.
